Erica Sampson found this cool organization called The League. The League works with children K-12 to help get children involved in the community.
Special themes are scheduled to serve different purposes. For example, October was to focus on volunteering and service, November poverty and hunger, January respect and caring, and April Mother Earth and the preservation of plants. Kids get involved with the community each month based on these ideas.
Teachers also get involved to lead the children in their mission for the month. Lessons and tools are available on this website for teachers, who would choose to volunteer as coaches, who can use it to drive students to join and then guide them once they were involved.
The League also has an award system to honor and to recognize children for all their hard work, dedication, and devotion to their community and to assist less fortune communities.
This website is the homepage that gives you the introduction to The League. Once on this page there are several other tabs that you can take a look at that give you a great explanation of the organization, how it works, how you can get children involved, and the impact that this makes on communities. There is also a video clip that you can watch at the bottom of the homepage. I think this is really cool and an awesome way to get the kids of D64 not only more involved in their own community, but to also be able to reach out to other communities. Take a peek. I look forward to speaking with all of you on Thursday. The League

The promo piece below about the model indicates that a comprehensive rather than a piecemeal approach is what they recommend. I will look for more info on the web but we may have to order materials from their website http://www.csos.jhu.edu/p2000/program.htm We may want to eventually join.
"No topic in education generates greater agreement than the need for positive parental involvement. Everyone wants it, but most educators need help in developing productive programs that involve family and community partners in ways that boost student success in school."
"Research shows that school, family, and community partnerships must be understood as an essential component of district leadership and school and classroom organization. Well-implemented, goal-oriented programs and practices of family and community involvement can help increase student learning and development. It takes time, organization, and effort to develop excellent programs."
